Dr. Anwar-ul-Hassan Gilani, Distinguished National Professor, Director, Drug Discovery and Natural Products Research, Dept. Biological & Biomedical Sciences, Aga Khan University Medical College, Karachi.
Prof. Gilani is WHO Advisor on Essential medicine and scientific advisor to International Foundation for Science. He won several national/international awards which include two civil awards by the President of Pakistan (Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imitaz), Salam prize in Biology by TWAS, Italy, Ibn-Al-Hayatham Prize in Science and Gold Medal by Pakistan Academy of Science, National Book Foundation Award, Boehringer International Research Award and recently Life-Time Academic Achievements Award by the Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan. He is a Fellow, Pakistan Academy of Science and more recently elected as the Fellow of TWAS- the World Academy of Sciences for advancement of Science in developing countries
Prof. Gilani’s career is that of a distinguished Pharmacologist, combining novel discoveries and distinctive mentorship roles, who won merit scholarship from primary school to PhD. He was born in Faisalabad (1955), obtained his BSc (Hon) in 1975 and MSc (Hon) in Physiology and Pharmacology (1978) with distinction from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. He has served at the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan as a lecturer (Pharmacy) from 1979-86 including study leave for PhD at the University of Sydney on merit scholarship. He joined the Aga Khan University in 1986 as Senior Instructor and rose to full Professor in 1997 through accelerated promotions where he occupied multiple leadership positions which include Director, Natural Products Research Program, Vice Chair, Research and Graduate Studies, Director, PhD Program in Health Sciences and Interim Chair, Board of Graduate Studies (2008-2009). Prof. Gilani also occupies the positions Adjunct Professor at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry and HEC Distinguished National Professor. He is currently on sabbatical leave since beginning of 2013, occupying the position of Tandem Dean, College of Health Sciences at Mekelle University, Ethiopia.
He earned three Patents, is a co-editor of two Conference proceedings and two WHO Books and published over 300 articles with cumulative IF around 600. Prof. Gilani supervised thesis research of 20 PhDs and his research attracted high citations (over 6800) with an h-index of 43 based on Google scholar citation report.
